Teen Zine Challenge: Zines to Make Change
As apart of NYPL's Summer at the Library programming, we are hosting a series of zine creation workshops. August's program will include an overview of zine history/culture, examples of social change related zines, and creating your own zine advocating for a social cause important to you. All materials and snacks will be provided. This event will take place in-person at the New Amsterdam Library and is restricted to tweens and teens in grades 6-12. Registration is not required.

Heroes & Villains Lower Manhattan Walking Tour
In New York, we love stories about heroic acts, courageous actions and the brave people who shaped New York. Bad actors had as much to do with shaping New York City as the acclaimed heroes – but even those heroes had skeletons in their closets. The Reynolds Pamphlet, anyone? Liam’s Heroes & Villains Walking Tour of Lower Manhattan, uncovers stories hidden beneath the ones appearing in all of the history books. From Jeremiah Hamilton to Hetty Green to some of the iconic filming locations where well known fictional heroes & villains (John Wick, anyone?) were brought to our screens, Liam covers it all. This tour is great for families and folks who love history as much as they love TV shows and movies.

Online Little Movers Storytime
This event is online only. Join us to hear stories, sing songs, and get those wiggles out as you help your active child build important early learning skills. Discover ways to promote early literacy at home! Best for new walkers, toddlers/or children at this developmental stage. Register and you will receive an email with the link by 9:00 am on the day of the event. Storytime is a program for parents/caregivers and their children. Both the parent/caregiver and the child must be present during the entire program: unaccompanied adults or children will be asked to leave the program. When registering for this program, parents/caregivers should use their name and information–you don’t need a library card to participate!

Little Movers Storytime
Join us for a storytime for children who are learning to toddle and talk! We’ll be reading our favorite stories, singing songs, practicing our big motor skills with movement, and making new friends! Recommended for children age 18 months – 36 months *Registration opens the day before Little Movers Storytimes. Please arrive before 4pm or your seat may be given to someone else.

Movies Under the Stars: Up
Grab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs. A feisty septuagenarian reluctantly teams up with a young explorer in this Oscar-winning Best Animated Feature Film by Pixar. Carl Fredricksen is a 78-year-old balloon salesman who dreams of seeing the wilds of South America, and it looks like he may get there after tying enough helium balloons to his house to take flight. The only kink in his plan is the 8-year-old stowaway on his front porch. Rated PG The following movie has been rated PG. Some material may not be suitable for children. The film should be investigated further by parents before they let their younger children attend. Movies begin at dusk. This event is FREE and open to the public. Glass bottles and alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited. In the event of heavy rain or extreme weather, the screening may be canceled. A is for Artist
Get creative each week as we make a variety of crafts using crayons, markers, paint, pencil and other materials! We will often connect our art to a specific artist or start the program reading a story that will be connected to the art we make that day. All materials will be provided. Parents and caregivers get ready to join in the fun! Online Registration is required. Please register using the name of the child attending. For ages 4 and up. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Multilingual Time
Sing songs and hear books in several different languages! No experience required! All ages welcome. Best for ages 5 and younger. Registration begins the day before at 9am. Please arrive before 4pm or your seat may be given to someone else.

Light of the World – Free advanced film screening
LIGHT OF THE WORLD officially opens in theaters September 5, but join us at the Sheen Center on Saturday, August 23rd for a free special advanced screening! It’s AD 30 and everyone is expectantly awaiting the coming Messiah. While Jesus isn’t exactly what they imagined, there is something special about this man.
