Movies Under the Stars: Harold and the Purple Crayon (2024)
Grab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs. When Harold is living within the confines of his book, anything he touches with his purple crayon can come to life. Now Harold wants to take it a step further and draw himself into the physical world. Based on the 1955 children's book of the same name. Rated G G — General Audiences. All Ages Admitted. A G-rated motion picture contains nothing in theme, language, nudity, sex, violence or other matters that, in the view of the Rating Board, would offend parents whose younger children view the motion picture. Movies begin at dusk. This event is FREE and open to the public. Glass bottles and alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited. In the event of heavy rain or extreme weather, the screening may be canceled. The decision to cancel the event will be made prior to the screening and will be promptly posted on our website. THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART PRESENTS Chantal Akerman: The Long View SEPTEMBER 11 – OCTOBER 16, 2025
The Museum of Modern Art announces the film series, Chantal Akerman: The Long View from September 11 – October 16, 2025 . MoMA’s complete retrospective of Chantal Akerman’s work for the cinema, comprising more than 40 features and rarely screened short films in new digital preservations, celebrates a multiyear effort by the Fondation Chantal Akerman and the Royal Film Archive of Belgium – CINEMATEK to restore, document, and exhibit her career in film, installation, and writing. International audiences hungering to discover more about Akerman (b. Belgium, 1950–2015) in the wake of her death have been rewarded with unprecedented access to her moving-image and paper archives. In addition to her feature films, many recently restored—from Je, tu, il, elle (1974), News from Home (1977), Golden Eighties (1986), D’Est (1993), and Demain on déménage (2004) to her venerated Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975)—MoMA’s retrospective also offers a renewed appreciation of her work in the short film form, including the four 8mm studies she made in the summer of 1967 as part of her entrance exams to the Brussels film school INSAS; her collaborations with the German choreographer Pina Bausch, the Austrian pianist Alfred Brendel, the French cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton, and the actors Delphine Seyrig, Aurore Clément, Catherine Deneuve, and Sami Frey; and her searching portraits of teenagers in Yonkers, nightfall over Shanghai, and a group of elderly Jewish women who survived the Holocaust (including, of course, her mother Natalia). On September 9, 2025, as part of Crossing the Line Festival and in collaboration with MoMA, L’Alliance New York presents the New York premiere of D’Est en musique , a live performance with Sonia Wieder-Atherton, at their Florence Gould Theater.

Table of Silence Project 9/11

The company will present the original full-scale version of the work with elements of the reimagined version as more than 150 dancers slowly ascend onto Josie Robertson Plaza at Lincoln Center to the sound of a conch shell’s call to action.

Long Island History Hunt
A dozen museums and historical societies, from Brooklyn to Montauk, are teaming up to offer an epic adventure to places where spies, patriots and presidents helped shaped local history. From the secrets of the Culper Spy Ring to the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, the past comes alive at every stop in a digital tapestry that weaves together history’s hidden gems and little-known stories. Participants scan a QR code or visit https://app.otocast.com/guide/LIHistoryHunt to register and then visit a designated museum, landmark, monument, historic home, park or colonial tavern. At each location, visitors are invited to take a selfie challenge and upload their photo. Visitors who complete a challenge at any site are automatically eligible to win a prize. Those who complete a challenge at all 12 sites will earn the title of Revolutionary Trailblazer and be entered into the grand prize drawing that includes $500, an 18 th century-style luncheon at the Ketcham Inn tavern, family museum memberships and a basket of curated surprises. The contest runs from July 1st through September 30th.

Anne Frank The Exhibition
For the first time in history, Anne Frank House presents a full-scale recreation of the rooms where Anne Frank, her parents and sister, and four other Jewish inhabitants spent two years hiding to evade Nazi capture. Anne Frank The Exhibition premieres in NYC at the Center for Jewish History. This presentation provides a captivating experience for visitors as they encounter the context that shaped Anne’s life—from her early years in Frankfurt through the rise of the Nazi regime and the family’s 1934 move to Amsterdam, where Anne lived until her 1944 arrest and deportation to Westerbork, a large transit camp in the Netherlands, then to Auschwitz-Birkenau, a concentration camp and killing center in Nazi-occupied Poland, and eventually to her death at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany when she was 15 years old. Ages 10 and older. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Mysteries from the Deep: Exploring Underwater Archaeology
Prepare to dive into the fascinating world of underwater discovery as the Intrepid Museum premieres Mysteries from the Deep: Exploring Underwater Archaeology . Located in the Museum’s Space Shuttle Pavilion, the bilingual exhibition marks the first stop of a multi-year international tour co-produced with Flying Fish, the acclaimed exhibition firm behind the Museum’s popular Apollo: When We Went to the Moon . This exhibition reflects the Museum’s ongoing commitment to delivering stories at the intersection of history and innovation. Rooted in Intrepid ’s historic legacy as an aircraft carrier that launched warplanes in multiple conflicts, Mysteries from the Deep takes visitors beneath the surface to explore sunken aircraft, shipwrecks, submerged cities and lost landscapes. Presented in both English and Spanish, these investigations span conflicts, cultures and centuries, demonstrating how underwater archaeology connects the past to the present and informs the future. The exhibition covers more than 9,000 square feet and is on view through January 11, 2026. Entry is free with general admission. Visitors become underwater archaeologists through 15 interactive experiences as they navigate sonar mapping, pilot a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), reconstruct digital dive sites and examine real artifacts from historic shipwrecks. From ancient ruins to cutting-edge technology, the exhibition displays the tools and tenacity behind underwater exploration. Exhibition Highlights: Bilingual Presentation (English/Spanish) – All exhibition text, videos and educational materials are available in two languages to ensure broader access. Underwater Archaeology Lab – Explore the science of underwater discovery using authentic tools and experiment with sonar, ROVs and AI. Deep Dive into Intrepid ’s Story – Apply newfound insights to the Museum’s aircraft collection, including the fragments of a Corsair featured in the exhibition Final Flight: Story of a WWII Corsair , located just steps away in the Museum’s hangar deck. Submerged Histories – Examine stories of Pavlopetri, Greece, the world’s oldest known sunken city and the Clotilda in Mobile Bay, Alabama, the last known slave ship to arrive in the U.S. Tools of the Trade – See archaeologist Megan Lickliter-Mundon’s actual dive suit and discover how remote sensing technologies like LiDAR and sonar illuminate the ocean floor. The Future of Exploration – Learn how underwater archaeology intersects with climate change, innovation and global preservation efforts. More than an exhibition, Mysteries from the Deep is an invitation to explore the unknown. Perfect for history lovers, science enthusiasts and curious minds of all ages, it offers a rare opportunity to uncover the hidden past and experience the thrill of discovery.

Tour the Historic Sands-Willets House, c. 1735/1845
Come explore how both the Sands and the Willets families lived in our historic home! During our 1-hour docent-led tour, you’ll visit Sands-Willets’ two period kitchen displays, and learn about their Colonial and post-Colonial roots. See how the Sands women spent their days cooking in the beehive oven and on the hearth, doing laundry without any conveniences, and much, much more. Our toy room is dedicated to children’s activities and children’s samplers from the 1700s and 1800s. The remainder of our period rooms, including two parlors and the dining room, show how the second family of this house, the Willets, lived. Our in-depth study of the suffragist movement shows how women progressed in their mission over the years, finally gaining success and earning the right to vote.

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART PRESENTS Stephen Prina: A Lick and a Promise SEPTEMBER 12 – DECEMBER 13, 2025
The Museum of Modern Art announces the exhibition, Stephen Prina: A Lick and a Promise , which will feature ticketed performances of Prina’s works from September 12 – December 13, 2025 . For the past five decades, artist, musician, and composer Stephen Prina has developed a singular and irreverent approach to installations, films, and musical performances. Prina frequently brings together networks of cultural materials—a Joni Mitchell song, Robert Bresson films, Glenn Gould recordings, the paintings of Édouard Manet—recombining them in different contexts to surface new meanings and associations. Stephen Prina: A Lick and a Promise will be the first in-depth survey to focus on the artist’s long engagement with music and performance, bringing new perspectives to a central factor in Prina’s wider oeuvre: how cultural artifacts find new lives in different contexts. With performances unfolding across multiple locations in the Museum, including the Kravis Studio, the exhibition presents the world premiere of A Lick and a Promise (2025), an orchestral commission for 16 instruments, alongside restagings of works such as Sonic Dan (1994–2001). The survey highlights Prina’s wide-ranging collaborations, including a performance of Beat of the Traps (1992), created with Mike Kelley and Anita Pace. The series culminates with A Push Comes to Love Fest , an all-day concert on December 13, 2025, featuring a range of artists including David Grubbs, Ken Okiishi and Emily Sundblad, Ursula Oppens, Marina Rosenfeld, TILT Brass, and White People Killed Them (Raven Chacon, John Dieterich, and Marshall Trammell). This exhibition offers an opportunity to celebrate Prina’s innovative approach to appropriation—one uniquely focused on sound and music—and the rare warmth and intellectualism that mark him as a prescient and still-evolving artist.

Bryant Park Picnic Performances Presented by Bank of America: American Symphony Orchestra | New York Profiles
New York Profiles showcases five American composers who lived and worked in New York, whose scores reflect the diverse musical styles of the mid – 20th century and celebrate their lasting influence on both the city and American music. In what has become a cherished tradition, the American Symphony Orchestra is pleased to debut its 2025-26 season at Bryant Park with New York Profiles, a concert showcasing five American composers whose works reflect the diverse musical styles of mid 20th century America. Each of these composers had strong ties to New York, a city that was central to their creative lives. Aaron Copland, a defining voice of American music, made New York his home while composing Appalachian Spring, an homage to American pioneer life. Henry Cowell shaped New York’s early experimental music scene, as heard in his Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 10. Julia Perry was closely connected to New York’s musical institutions such as Lincoln Center, where her A Short Piece for Small Orchestra was performed and recorded. Ulysses Kay, whose Joy and Fears is drawn from his soundtrack to The Quiet One, was also a key figure in New York’s cultural world, while Norman Dello Joio’s New York Profiles is a vivid musical portrait of the city, composed as a tribute to his native New York. These composers, living and working in New York during the 1940s and ’50s, contributed to what is known as the Golden Age of American classical music. New York Profiles celebrates their lasting influence on both the city and American music.

Younger athletes are also encouraged to register to participate in the Splash & Dash event, which is a 50-meter swim and a quarter-mile run for athletes between the ages of 5 and 7. “I am excited to see the smiles and accomplishments as each athlete crosses the finish line and for those first-timers being called a triathlete,” says Lightning Warriors Head Coach Noah Lam. Favor bags will also be distributed to each racer, as well as medals for all finishers, awards for the top male and female finishers and post-race refreshments. Participating in youth competitions helps to build positive physical activity habits in children. According to Lam, “Every child should be able to swim, bike and run as those are lifetime skills… We’ve also seen that physical activity can provide immense benefits for mental health, more self-esteem, a sharper focus on achieving goals and a better ability to connect with other kids.” Athletes’ individual skills will also be enhanced by being a part of a team in a healthy competitive and supportive space. “You get to find new ways to overcome adversity in a safe environment,” Lam states. “These skills will thus motivate them to exude confidence and conquer their goals, both inside and outside of racing.” The Mini Maniac event is the largest sanctioned kids duathlon and triathlon on Long Island with 181 participants in 2024, and an expected attendance of 200 racers this year, including 100 first-time registrants. To register for Mini Maniac, visit www.runsignup.com/minimaniac . Registration ends on September 12, 2025 at 6:00 PM EDT.

Family Program- Parks and Public Art: Statues and Sculptures in Battery Park City
Did you know that Battery Park City was once part of the Hudson River? Fifty years ago our neighborhood was vacant landfill, with no parks or buildings. But some artists saw this new “beachfront” as full of creative potential. Agnes Denes planted a golden Wheatfield here in 1982, and Art on the Beach placed surreal sculptures and experimental installations to the shoreline. In this family program, young artists will explore how Battery Park City continues to blend nature, history, and imagination through public art. We’ll take a short walk along the esplanade to discover the urban green space, statues, and sculptures—each with a story to tell—then return to the Museum to design our own monuments or visionary artworks for a future park! Ages 3+. This is an in-person children’s program that meets at the Skyscraper Museum, 39 Battery Pl. You must reserve a place for your child/family by clicking the “RSVP” button on our website. This will forward you to Ticketstripe for registration. After registering, you will receive emails to confirm your attendance through a Google Form (you only need to fill this out once). If you do not confirm attendance by the Friday morning before the program, your places will be canceled. Every child should be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Family programs are free! Reservation priority is given to The Skyscraper Museum members. Want to become a member? Fall programs are supported by a Community Partnership with the Battery Park City Authority. Questions? Email programs@skyscraper.org or call our office 212-945-6324.
